Having our own mobility shops we come across people with dementia every day of the week. Some family members handle the situation better than others as it is a very trying place to be for a carer. A massive amount of patience is needed and we think the list above is a great reminder when we deal with a family member or friend with dementia to understand it from their point of view. Contact us today to find out more. Last month The Teesside Family Foundation gave a 50 year old lady with stage 4 Cancer paralysed from the waist down a better quality of life.✨
After an application by her daughter to help fund an electric wheelchair, we decided to buy and donate the chair from the Foundation. The electric wheelchair was built to specification by MD Mobility who also kindly gave a big discount to the Foundation. After receiving the chair the ladies' daughter said "Getting the electric wheelchair for my mam really means so much, she will now have the independence to do things for herself and not have to rely on her husband as much. She’ll no longer be stuck in her bed all day, she’ll be able to use the chair around the house and visit neighbours and family in the village which really will be amazing for her. Thank you for giving my mum her independence, We are so grateful" It is days like this that make you realise how important the work we are doing is, thank you to every person and company that supports the Foundation.🙌 Despite walking difficulties, Karen Foxton, 39 from Guisborough, has opened her world up to countryside peace and tranquillity thanks to an off-road mobility scooter.
Karen gets around her home and shops independently this is made possible by a TGA WHILL Model C powerchair as she has Multiple Sclerosis. A local TGA dealer, MD Mobility in Guisborough, supplied Karen with the WHILL and supported her when she got married by loaning a scooter to drive down the aisle. More recently though, Karen decided that she wanted more freedom in the local countryside and therefore required an off-road scooter. She had owned a bigger model before, however was “shook to bits” as it did not have proper suspension. With the recent lockdown, Karen became even more determined to get outdoors comfortably and safely. This led to getting a TGA Vita X. “My Vita X has added a huge new part to my life,” she said. “I’m now going places I thought I’d never get to see again after Multiple Sclerosis took hold of me. Lockdown has made me want to get out even more and now I can. I can escape into the Guisborough Hills or Roseberry Topping area. I’ve lived around here all my life but I am now discovering new tracks I can do again. “I believe it is so important to get outside, my scooter helps me forget about everything and the craziness of the world right now. If you are looking for escapism, a scooter’s the answer. I will never tire of the tranquillity of the Yorkshire countryside.” Karen found the Vita X while researching online before being recommended one by MD Mobility. After a test drive, she decided it had everything she needed, offering quality and reliability. Before buying it, she went out measuring the width of local countryside gates just to check the Vita would fit through gaps… it did. With chunky tyres and excellent suspension this scooter would give support and stability for Karen even when driving over roots and rocks. “My Vita X is a dream to drive,” she added. “I go out on my own or with my brother who is getting fit, so he’ll walk alongside me or takes his mountain bike, plus he brings his camera as a budding photographer. I always take the family dog Mojo, a two-year old red fox lab. Mojo loves running next to me when I’m driving either on or off lead - he’s got used to my scooter quickly. Having a dog gives you a reason to go out which is important. We all go places that are popular with mountain bikers and horse riders where the tracks are ideal for my tough scooter. So many people ask me questions about it, they’ve never seen anything like it before.” Karen is an advocate of the outdoors especially if you have restricted mobility for the mental health and wellbeing benefits it provides. “I now have so many possibilities when out in the countryside, getting to places you could never reach in a car,” she concludes. “Being outside on your own builds up your confidence and over time you learn techniques for tackling more challenging tracks. The comfort it gives me is superb and I regularly drive over seven miles with over half a battery charge left, even when driving up lots of steep hills. Add to this my WHILL at home and I have total mobility.” Meet three of the lightest, take-apart boot scooters in the world!

By Laura Nollan Staff Reporter at The Northern Echo KAREN FOXTON, a Middlesbrough College staff member who has Multiple Sclerosis was able to drive down the aisle and get married thanks to MD Mobility scooters. Karen, 39, from Guisborough, began teaching hairdressing skills at Middlebrough College 11 years ago. She recently changed roles to become a Safeguarding and Welfare Officer. She thoroughly enjoys her role and, despite mobility challenges, is able to easily access the campus with a pioneering powerchair. Previously she owned a mobility scooter to remain mobile, however, with changing needs, a powered wheelchair now gives her more independence inside and out. They were supplied by family-run MD Mobility, also based in Guisborough, which has supported Karen over many years. Proprietors Alan and Carol Garner have a longstanding rapport with Karen and when she mentioned she was getting married, they offered help in terms of mobility at her wedding. MD Mobility has showrooms in Guisborough and Northallerton, which provide a range of products for independent living, including TGA mobility scooters. Karen had already part-exchanged her mobility scooter, however, there was no way driving down the aisle. Alan gave Karen her scooter back for an extended loan so she could tie her flowers to the front basket and greet her husband-to-be, Roy, exactly as she wanted. Karen said: “We got married in Redcar and Cleveland registry office and had such a memorable day, made so much easier with my TGA scooter and powerchair. Alan at MD Mobility was so amazing giving me my scooter back for the ceremony and then I could transfer into my WHILL for the wedding reception. My WHILL has white trim which matched my dress, so many guests commented on how wonderful it was, it generated so much interest. I was able to move around independently in the tightest of spaces mingling with guests at the pub which wouldn’t have been possible without assistance."
“Roy and I even had a bit of fun racing against each other at the wedding on our scooter and powerchair, we entertained everyone on the day.” Karen uses her WHILL for in the boot of her car, so she can be driven to college. |
